The mountain climbed by the first generation of Americans was obvious and immense. It was their lot to separate by force from the most powerful nation on earth. This they did, but barely, with pivotal help from other nations.
Later generations faced different crises. All assumed different shapes. But inevitably they came. A second war with the most powerful nation on earth, the British Empire. Slavery, succession and a full-blown Civil War. Two world wars. A Cold War that was potentially nuclear.
Now, the challenge comes from radical Islam and its most lethal and menacing advocate: ISIS.
Yet much of what is said and written about ISIS lacks roots and context. For example, ISIS's torture methods earn comparisons to the barbaric practices of the Dark Ages. That much is fair. Yet it is also implied that Muslims naturally prefer ignorance and disdain of social advancement. In fact, during the Middle Ages, Muslims were the world's chief scientists and philosophers. The historian Will Durant noted their "unchallenged ascendancy" in science in the late Middle Ages, and the vast and continuing influence of Muslim philosophers such as Avicenna and Averroes, who helped preserve and perpetuate the works of Aristotle.
The new Dark Ages promised by ISIS completely dishonors those historic achievements. Theirs is a regime of bloodthirsty tyranny, with motivations of power and greed as old as sin and weaponry. Their aim: to impose radical Islam by force and to preside over this "caliphate."
There is no getting around it. America and the West must fight to keep what we have--the freedom and democratic institutions we have inherited as our birthright.
